A newly commissioned Plastic Bottle Crushing Machine at Mahalaxmi station of Mumbai suburban section of WR, was made available for use of passengers on 8th March,2021 .
Indian Railways has taken various initiatives to reduce, recycle and dispose plastic waste generated in stations in an eco-friendly manner. In connection with this, 33 Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines are decided to be installed at 23 stations of Mumbai Divisions i.e Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Mahalaxmi, Khar Road, Santacruz, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Palghar, Boisar, Umergaon, Bilimora, Udvada, Vapi, Valsad, Navsari, Udhna Jn and Surat.
Instead of the provision of Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines on expenditure module, Mumbai Division has decided to acquire Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines on earning module with a dual object to curb expenditure and to earn Non-Fare Revenue wherein Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines provider will get the opportunity to earn through the display of advertisements on Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines as well as the sale of plastic flakes collected in the machine.
A total of 17 Bottle crushing machine have already been installed under CSR at various stations of Mumbai Division viz. Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus, Vile Parle, Andheri, Borivali, Vapi, Valsad, Navsari, Udhna and Surat stations. Besides this, 25 Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines have been installed by G. G. Engineering Ltd at 16 stations of Mumbai Division i.e. Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Dadar, Matunga Road, Mahim, Bandra Local, Bandra Terminus, Andheri, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Vasai Road, Nalasopara and Virar stations.
From the installation of these 25 machines, WR has earned Rs.15,000/-per annum as license fees as well as a saving of Rs 87,50,00/- from this contract. Similarly, with the installation of additional 33 new machines, WR will earn Rs 26,800/- as license fees as well as Rs 1,15,50,000/- as saving from this earning module.
