The Indian Railways has managed to generate over eight lakh mandays of work for migrants affected by the COVID-19 lockdown, a statement from the ministry has said.
The figure is for the period from the announcement of the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan up to 4th September 2020. The scheme was implemented in six states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The ministry has claimed that 12,276 workers have been employed under this scheme so far and that 1,631 crores have been paid out to contractors for the projects currently being implemented. No data was provided on the actual amount of money paid to the workers employed.
The 125-day ‘Abhiyaan’ is being undertaken in 116 districts for 25 categories of workers in six states.
