Another 7.5 kilometres have been added to Bengaluru Metro’s network. The Mysore Road – Kengeri Western Extension of the Purple Line was inaugurated today.
The Purple Line operated from Baiyyapanahalli to Mysore Rd. With the extension, 6 new stations beyond Mysore Road Metro Station have been added. On commissioning of this section, (East-West) purple line metro corridor will become 25.63 km long with 23 stations. Incremental ridership of 75,000 in 2021 is expected with the extended stretch.
The public will be able to use the extended stretch from Monday 30th August 2021.
Construction of this stretch began in February 2016 as part of Phase 2 network expansion work of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL). A further extension from Kengeri to Challaghatta (2km) is scheduled for completion by March 2022.
Bengaluru Metro Purple Line Western Extension Details
The new stations are Nayandanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Jnanabharathi, Pattanagere, Kengeri Bus Terminal and Kengeri. Parking facility is provided at Nayandanahalli, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Jnanabharathi and two-level parking at Kengeri Bus Terminal Metro Station.
The fare for travelling from Baiyyapanahalli to Kengeri will be Rs. 56/- and Kengei to Silk Institute, which is the longest stretch, would be Rs. 60/-. Travel time from Baiyyapanahalli to Kengeri will be 52 minutes.
Energy-efficient LED lights have been provided at all 6 stations. All the stations are provided with entry/exits opening on the newly provided service road. Bus bays, Pickup and drop areas for taxis and autos are all earmarked on the service roads. The public can use the stations for crossing the roads through the unpaid areas. Besides, roof-top solar plants will be installed by March 2022.
The inauguration ceremony was performed by the Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai, and Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Puri said that the operational punctuality of Bengaluru Metro is 99.8%, one of the best in the country. He also said that since the inauguration of the first metro line in Delhi in 2002, about 730 km metro lines are operational in 18 cities today. Puri said that 1,049 km of metro rail and RRTS projects are under construction in various cities.
