After decades of kicking the can down the road, the Railway Ministry finally took the leap and initiated a major reorganization of the Indian Railways and its top management body; the Railway Board.
The decisions that set the process in motion were actually taken in the last few days of December 2019. The Indian Railways Management Service was announced to put an end to departmentalism. The Railway Board was reorganized to improve decision-making.

COVID-19 hit infrastructure works in an unprecedented fashion this year. Not only were many projects slowed down or stopped entirely due to the lockdown, but the massive damage caused to Indian Railways’ finances also hit hard.
Nevertheless, IR managed to get back on its feet quickly. As a result, 2020 saw many new capacity enhancement and electrification works get commissioned. Several major projects also got off the mark this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the nation’s transportation network and supply chains. Indian Railways kept things going. Not only did IR ensure that foodgrain and fuel reach consumers, but the organization played a big role in sending millions of stranded workers back home.
