Production increased despite COVID-19 related restrictions being put in place in March.
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), the world’s largest locomotive manufacturing unit, has surpassed its own world record by producing 431 locomotives in FY 2019-20. This was achieved despite COVID-19 restrictions creating disruptions at the fag end of the financial year.
India’s premier locomotive manufacturer produced 402 locos in FY 2018-19. This has been recognised by Limca Book of Records as World Record, according to a press release issued by officials from the unit.
CLW began ramping up production over the years to meet the increasing demand for electric locomotives from Indian Railways.
Production has witnessed a jump of 75% over the last 6 yrs from 250 in 2014-15 to 431 in 2019-20 to support 100% Electrification and Make in India, according to a statement from CLW.
The unit has been operating at twice its installed capacity of 200 locomotives per year.
With improved by supply chain management, hard work & dedication of staff & officers of Team CLW has been able to achieve this ever best record production in FY 2019-20 by consistently producing average 40+ locomotives since July 2019, notes the CLW release.
