Carriage Workshop, Matunga – Catering to traffic demands of Central Railway
Carriage Workshop, Matunga is a pioneer workshop of Central Railway established in 1915. This workshop is catering to traffic demands of Central Railway by providing overhauled AC & Non-AC ICF Coaches for mainline and Suburban EMU coaches, which is the lifeline of Mumbai.
Recently technological and infrastructural inputs have been given to workshop and a new LHB Wheel repair Shop been commissioned. This shop is equipped with advanced CNC machines which are Industry 4.0 compliant and is the first on Central Railway to implement the same. Industry 4.0 marries physical production and operations of machines with smart digital technology for real time monitoring.
The Workshop has also taken initiative towards automation of Bogie overhauling activities i.e. Bogie assembly and dis-assembly, Helical springs maintenance and LHB Cartridge Taper Roller bearing handling. These projects are being executed through Indian Railway Organisations namely COFMOW and WPO.
Implementation of above projects will not only result in Workshop capacity augmentation to handle rising demand of Rolling stock maintenance of Indian Railway but also improvement in the quality of repairs and reduction in the failure of rolling stock during service.
