Matunga Carriage Workshop has been contributing towards fighting COVID-19 over the last several months. During the lockdown period starting 23rd March 2020, Team Matunga contributed by converting 120 coaches into Isolation Wards in a record time of 12 days, highest by any Central Railway unit. The dedicated team residing predominantly in suburban areas put in sincere efforts to achieve the target while taking all precautions like thermal scanning at entry points, compulsory wearing of masks, social distancing, sanitization of coaches and workplace.
Matunga Carriage Workshop has taken several measures to prepare the workshop to function in the current circumstances. It has manufactured inhouse 25 foot operated wash basins, developed and fabricated in house 12 foot operated sanitizer dispenser units, inhouse production of 3000 litres of hand sanitizer, distribution of PPE kits, masks, sanitizer, gloves and face shield to employees. The Unions and Associations of the workshop have actively participated in the restart of operations. They have also been actively spreading awareness about COVID-19 and boosting the morale of the staff.
After resumption, the workshop has turned out 80 coaches and 3 EMU rakes after carrying out the periodic overhaul besides supplying a record number of 170 coach sets of bogies. Shri Sanjeev Mittal, General Manager, Central Railway appreciated the officers and staff of the workshop for being the flag bearer in helping the railways to carry out the activities in a record-breaking spree during the corona pandemic.
