Diesel loco sheds at Bokaro of South Eastern Railway’s (SER) Adra Division and Erode of Southern Railway’s (SR) Salem Division will now home electric locos.
This follows Indian Railways’ (IR) decision to completely evacuate diesel locos from sheds in electrified territories. The move aims to reduce instances of running diesel locos under wires.
As on November 30, 2019, 467 electric locos were being maintained at 15 diesel loco sheds across IR.
However, the respective zones SER and SR will have to maintain adequate diesel locos required for the movement of Accident Relief Trains (ART) and Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMV).
Before evacuation of these locos, SER and SR have to ensure that their maintenance and outage are not affected. The zones also have to decide on shed -wise distribution of these released locos within their zone.
