The first look of the rolling stock to be used on Delhi’s upcoming Regional Rapid Transport System was unveiled today.
D S Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, unveiled the design of the rolling stock via a video conference. Bombardier is to manufacture the new RRTS rolling stock at its plant in Savli, Gujarat.
Here’s what the NCRTC’s Delhi–Meerut RRTS corridor rolling stock will look like:
The RRTS trainset will be a standard gauge electric multiple unit that can be configured in 3, 6 and 9 coach formation. The three-coach formation seems planned for local transit service in Meerut city.

Gauge | Standard Gauge |
Possible Configurations | 3, 6 and 9 coach trainsets |
Operation modes | Automatic Train Operation (ATO) |

The seat pitch is designed to maximize legroom and seats with headrests and arm rests for optimal comfort. In business class, the recline feature will allow passengers to adjust their seat for improved comfort. The driver’s seat is also ergonomically designed and each driver can adjust the driver’s seat to meet their own comfort needs, says Bombardier.
The business class coach will also feature automatic vending machines for snacks and refreshments for passengers.
Bombardier had earlier won the contract to build 30 six coach RRTS trainsets and 10 three coach local service trainsets from NCRTC. The rolling stock manufacturer is also to maintain the trains for a period of 15 years.
NCRTC is building a 160 kmph Regional Rapid Transit System radiating out of Delhi towards Meerut, Alwar and Panipat.
The 82 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is first off the block, with construction already underway for the project.
