Indian Railways (IR) is at the cusp of transformation.
The soon-to-be-introduced Train 18, capable of hitting 180 kmph, replacement of level crossings by road over / road under bridges, better passenger amenities, construction of the dedicated freight corridor and the high-speed railways, besides the rapid pace of doubling and electrification are aimed at taking the national transporter to its next version IR 2.0.
The makeover of one of India’s best process-driven organizations has been necessitated due to capacity constraints, burgeoning population and their expectations, and the usual disruptors – technology, competing modes of transport, and rapid changes in its freight loading mix.
Rich History
When Okhil Chandra Sen wrote the famous ‘jackfruit letter’ in 1909, to the Sahibganj divisional railway office, toilets were introduced in trains.
Until recently, the Railway budget speech by the Rail Minister was one of the most-awaited events in the Lok Sabha as it outlined the works completed and the future works to be done by IR. Trains became synonymous with rail ministers (Jayanti Janata, Sampark Kranti, Garib Rath, and Duronto ) and so were the liveries ( colour schemes) until IR decided to paint every train blue.
