Indian Railways Freight Loading Up 8.5 Percent YoY in December 2020

Indian Railways has reported a year-on-year growth in freight loading for the month of December 2020.

The growth comes despite a significant contraction of the economy over the past several months due to the disruption created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indian Railways loaded 118.13 million tonnes of goods in December 2020. This represents a growth of 8.54% from last year’s loading for the same period (108.84 million tonnes).

Earnings from freight haulage were up at Rs. 11,788.11 crores. This represents an increase of 757.74 crores (6.87%) compared to last year’s earnings for the same period of 11,030.37 crores.

In the month of December 2020, Indian Railways loading was 118.13 million tonnes which includes
50.67 million tonnes of coal
15.31 million tonnes of iron ore
6.13 million tonnes of foodgrains
5.23 million tonnes of fertilizers
4.3 million tonnes of mineral oil
7.46 million tonnes of cement (excluding clinker).

Improvements in freight movements will be institutionalized and incorporated in the upcoming zero based time table, claims a statement from the Indian Railways.
