Indian Railways will take up 256 projects worth Rs 1.84 lakh crore for execution first.
[These 256 are a part of the IR’s overall portfolio of 498 rail projects- of length 49069 km costing Rs 6.75 lakh crore- in various stages of planning /execution.]
The 256 projects have been divided into three categories as per the Railway Minister’s statement in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. An allocation of Rs 30198 crore has been earmarked in the FY20 Union Budget.
Project classification
IR has classified 58 of these as super critical projects, 68 as critical projects and the remaining 130 as other throughput enhancement projects based on operational requirements.
As on date, the balance length of super critical projects is 2347 km, critical projects’ balance is 5676 km and the balance of other doubling projects is 9703 km.
IR is focussing on faster execution of these projects, for early return to IR, the rail minister said.
For capacity enhancement projects institutional financing has been done by arranging loan of Rs.1.5 lakh crore. This has increased IR’s capacity for committed fund provision for essential projects.
March 2019 status
IR has already commissioned 8,979 km spending Rs 1.54 lakh crore up to March 2019.
The details are as follows:-
Out of 188 new line projects of length 21,295 km, costing Rs.3.87 lakh crore, 2,622 km has been commissioned. Of the 55 gauge conversion projects of length 7,275 km, costing Rs 56135 crore, 3573 km has been commissioned. Of the 255 doubling projects of length 20,500 km, costing Rs 2.32 lakh crore, 2784 km has been commissioned.
A sum of Rs.85,536 crore has been incurred on new lines, Rs 19640 crore on gauge conversion and Rs Rs 48342 crore on doubling respectively.
