Mumbai Metro’s Line 5 from Kapurbawdi to Bhiwandi has moved one step ahead. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finally awarded the contract for the construction of Line 5’s trainset maintenance depot at Kasheli. The depot will be constructed on 27 hectares of land, as announced by MMRDA.
Ritwik Projects has won the contract for a quoted amount of Rs. 589.5 crores.
Kasheli Metro Depot will have a parking capacity for 30 trainsets simultaneously. A stabling yard, a hazard store building, a heavy wash plant, an underground tank, a Depot Control Center (DCC), administrative and central store buildings, a workshop and inspection building, a C.M. V. Building, a Receiving Substation (RSS), a Test Track, ETP & STP (Effluent Treatment Plant & Sewage Treatment Plant), a Compound Wall, Security Watch Tower, and staff accommodations are components to be set up at the depot.
According to MMRDA, the depot is a critical facility for commissioning and maintaining the metro corridors. It serves various functions such as car storage, operations, train parking, minor train repairs, heavy equipment handling and testing, cleaning, and periodic inspections.
Mumbai Metro Line 5’s 24.9 km stretch from Thane to Bhiwandi and later Kalyan is being developed in two phases. Work on the 1st phase 11.9 km route between Thane and Bhiwandi is nearly 80 percent complete. The authority expects to handle 3 lakh daily users of this line once complete.
