The IGBT power conversion technology based locos are rated at 6,000 hp each and fit to operate at 160 km/h. The locos are designed to especially to operate trains in push-pull configuration.

Indian Railways has been planning to increase use of push-pull configuration. The Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani via Central Railway is one of the few trains to operate in push-pull mode on its network.

Another key feature of the two WAP-5s is the ability to supply power to the train’s coaches for HOG mode operation with composite converters.

Indian Railways has not yet announced the train to which these new 160 km/h locos will be allocated.
