Several major works are underway in Northeast Frontier Railway territory to reduce congestion and increase capacity.
The zone expects to improve average speed and punctuality of both passenger and freight trains once these works are completed.
List of Capacity Enhancement Works Underway on Northeast Frontier Railway
- A new double-line bridge near Jalpaiguri over the Teesta river in West Bengal. Expected to be completed by January 2021.
- Track laying and related works between Betgara to Gumanihat stations (46.34 Km) as part of the new double line work. Expected to be completed by March 2021. On completion, the New Jalpaiguri-New Bongaigaon section will become a double line section.
- Work has commenced for a new line from New Bongaigaon – Kamakhya via Rangiya (142 km) in Assam. Completion expected by March 2023.
- The second line in New Bongaigaon- Goalpara Town – Kamakhya (176 km) section in Assam is targeted for completion by March 2023.
- A new double line is being laid between Digaru and Hojai stations in Assam. Work is expected to be finished by May 2021. Capacity on the Guwahati – Lumding section will increase substantially after completion.
- New line work from Gauripur to Abhyapuri as an alternative route bye-passing New Bongaigaon (86.44 Km) is also going on full swing in Assam and expected to be completed by February 2021.
