Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, on Monday, reviewed the progress of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP).

The meeting attended by Senior officials of Railway Board and Government of Karnataka.

This project, approved by the Government of India in October 2020 is being targeted for completion by 2026 at an estimated cost of Rs 15767 crore.

Goyal observed that the project should be planned in a futuristic manner keeping in mind the growing needs of the city of Bengaluru.

He said the suburban project should be based on Make In India policy and boost Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission.

Corridors

The project envisages construction of 4 Suburban Rail Corridors with a total route length of 148.17 kms.

These are Chikabanavara- Baiyyapanahalli via Yesvantpur, Bengaluru City-Devanahalli via Yesvantpur, Rajankunte-Heelalige via Baiyyapanahalli and Whitefield- Kengeri via Bengaluru Cantt.

The project will be implemented by Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (KRIDE), a Joint Venture company set up by Ministry of Railways with Government of Karnataka as a special purpose vehicle.

The project envisions creation of a dedicated suburban railway system in Bengaluru city to ease traffic congestion besides connecting Bengaluru International Airport, IT Hubs and commercial centres.

It will integrate multiple modes of transport like the Metro, Railways and bus transport by constructing interchange hubs. For instance, Baiyyapanahalli is likely to be the interchange point with the Bengaluru Metro Railway.
