Prayagraj region: Future rail projects

Six rail projects at Prayagraj are on the anvil to ease congestion. They are as follows:

  1. The first is the Prayagraj – Bamhrauli – 4th line (10 km) with fly-over at Subedarganj is being constructed. Upon completion, this will facilitate seamless traffic movement from Prayag Jn / Prayagraj Rambag to Bamrauli situated on the Howrah- Delhi high density route. Trains from Prayag Jn /Prayagraj Rambag that are received on platform number 6 will use the flyover. They would no longer have to use crossovers to access the Howrah Delhi main line which holds up traffic in the DN direction.

The capital outlay for this project sanctioned is Rs 493.11 crore plus funding under extra budgetary resources ( institutional financing) called EBR (IF) sanctioned amount being Rs 1 crore.

2. The already doubled Phaphamau-Allahabad (12.9 km) line has a new material modification for a bypass line between Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway track -that is – a line between Prayag Jn and Prayagraj Rambag. Once completed trains can be run between Prayag Jn and Prayagraj Rambag seamlessly. As on date, any train between these two stations has to necessarily go to Prayagraj Jn. and reverse direction.

The capital outlay for this project is Rs 144.7269 crore and EBR(IF) is Rs 120.7269 crore.

3. The third line between Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Jn (DDU) and Prayagaraj Jn is also being constructed with several sections already done. This will entail construction of a new bridge over Yamuna at Naini. This bridge will replace the old Yamuna bridge.

The first bridge with a single broad gauge line over the Yamuna between Naini and Allahabad ( as Prayagraj was then called) was completed on August 15, 1865. Doubling was done in two phases – the  3.76 mile first phase was completed on January 15,1906 and the 2nd phase of 0.6 miles was completed on October 4, 1913.

This bridge is over 100 years old and trains run over the bridge under a permanent speed restriction as on date. The third line has been sanctioned with a capital outlay of Rs 535.4929 crore and an EBR (IF) of Rs 2291.08 crore.

4. Flyovers from Iradatganj : Three rail flyovers have been sanctioned by Indian Railways to ease congestion at Naini Jn and Prayagraj Chheoki as follows:

  1. Construction of a 12-km Naini – Iradatganj flyover will result in decongestion of traffic from Manikpur to DDU. Trains will use the flyover to access the Delhi Howrah DN line instead of a crossver at Prayagraj Chheoki which delays UP line traffic as on date.

The capital outlay for this flyover is Rs 337.9732 crore EBR (IF) Rs 337.975 crore and EBR (Special) Rs 0.0018 crore.

b. A 20.1-km flyover between Iradatganj – Kunwadih has been sanctioned at a capital outlay of Rs 919.48 crore and EBR (IF) Rs 919.48 crore. This flyover will connect Manikpur -Naini line directly to Prayagraj Rambag-Banaras line at Kunwadih (situated between Jhusi and Ramnathpur), via a new bridge over the river Ganga. This will do away with the necessity of a direction reversal of trains at Prayagraj Jn. for trains from Naini Jn going towards Varanasi via Prayagraj Rambag.

Along with a ‘Y’ type formation at Kunwadih, trains from Iradatganj can access Prayag Jn via Kunwadih, Jhusi, Prayagraj Rambag and the bypass from NER at Rambag to Prayag Jn. This will eliminate direction reversal of trains at Prayagraj Jn. for trains from Naini Jn. To Prayag Jn.

c. Finally, construction of Karchana -Iradatganj flyover will result in trains not getting delayed in Prayagraj Chheoki yard. Moreover, the delay faced while being received from the Chheoki chord line on to the Naini Manikpur line will also be done away with.

The capital outlay for this flyover is Rs 279.6269 crore EBR (IF) is Rs 281.55 crore and EBR (Special) is Rs1.9281 crore.
