Since the Indian Railways is rapidly electrifying routes, a natural fallout is that diesel locos are being rendered surplus, especially the older ALCOs.
To prevent wastage of funds, the railway board has already instructed that such locomotives shall no longer be sent for POH or other major maintenance or re-powering schedules.
Pursuant to this, a lot of surplus spares have accumulated at DMW, posing space issues. Thus, the Diesel Modernisation Works, Patiala has written a letter to various zones with a list of available spares asking the zonal railways to asses their requirements of these spares.
If required, they may be procured from DMW, failing which, the spares will be taken up for condemnation. Most of these spares are in the form of traction motors and traction alternator components like magnet frames.
If the High Power Diesel locos import from USA was avoided, perhaps the condemnation of the existing useful locos could have been reduced or avoided.
