SCR takes 30 trains on electric traction : To save Rs 53 crores

South Central Railway, has taken 30 trains on electric traction during the current fiscal FY20 saving about Rs 53 crores per annum. This follows Indian Railways’s decision in 2018 to fully electrify its BG network.

IR is estimated to save overall Rs 13,510 crore per annum by switching to electric traction.

Following is the list of trains taken on electric traction :

Benefits of electric traction :

  1. Reduced expenditure on maintenance of locomotives. Electric locomotive maintenance cost is Rs. 16.45 per thousand GTKM compared to diesel locomotive maintenance cost which is Rs. 32.84 per thousand GTKM. About 15-20% energy will be saved due to regeneration facility in electric locomotives.
  2. Seamless train operation by eliminating detention of trains due to change in traction from diesel to electric and vice versa, thereby enhancing line capacity due to higher haulage capacity of electric locomotives.
  3. Reduction in diesel oil consumption by about 2.8 billion litres, thereby reducing dependence on imported diesel oil and saving foreign exchange.
  4. In line with commitment made by India in COP21, total shift to electric traction will reduce CO2 emission of Railways by 24% till 2027-28. Green house gas emission for electric traction will fall below diesel traction by 2019-20 making it environmentally friendly option.
