South Eastern Railway(SER) lost Rs 15.77 crore to vandalism on tracks in the last couple of days (December 13 and 14) according to sources.
The agitation against the recently passed Citizen Amendment Act turned ugly in West Bengal with railway assets being vandalized by agitators at several locations between Howrah and Kharagpur in SER’s Kharagpur division.

Six railway stations Sankrail, Uluberia, Chengail, Nalpur, Fuleshwar and Bauria bore the brunt of these protests and lost over Rs 2.12 crore (see table) in these two days. Losses at three level crossing gates (LC-13, LC-15 and LC-28) have been pegged at over Rs 3.72 crore.
Losses on damage to two locomotives (Loco numbers 25043 and 22272) lost Rs 25 lakh.
Four train rakes (Humsafar Express, Mumbai Mail, Kandari Express and Coromandel Express) stuck in the agitation lost Rs 59 lakh.
Kharagpur division had to process refunds worth over Rs 24.37 lakh.
Loss on cancellations of passenger trains was over Rs 4.6 crore whereas SER lost over Rs 4.23 crore due to cancellations of goods trains.
